According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, out of all major occupations, careers in nursing are expected to experience the highest growth well into 2008. Those planning to enter the nursing industry can expect to see rises in salary, job openings, and benefits.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the median salary of Registered Nurses in 2004 was $52,330.
The lowest earned nursing salary was $37,300 and the highest nursing salary was more than $74,760. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported that more than 28% of nurses earn a salary of at least $64,000 per year which is a 13% increase from the previous year.
There are a number of reasons why nursing salaries are predicted to rise. One reason is that the number of job openings is expected to increase due to the rise in population. The United States is expected to have a larger number of senior citizens requiring medical care. Another factor in the creation of job openings is that a large number of nurses are expected to retire in upcoming years and will need to be replaced.
Nursing salaries will also be affected by the introduction of technological advances. The medical industry is expecting to introduce technology to help with patient care and preventive care. Hospitals expect to increase their number of openings due to high turnover rates. Most hospital nurses work frequent over-time, night, and weekend shifts. As a result, they experience tremendous amounts of stress and quickly burnout. In order to prevent this, hospitals are offering increases in nursing salaries, signing bonuses, compatible working hours, and benefits.
Nursing salaries will also be affected by the increase in demand for advanced specialties. Nurses with at least a bachelor's degree will experience the project opportunities. However, those with advanced degrees in nursing such as clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, midwives, and anesthetists will be in higher demand.
Opportunities in nursing are much greater in major cities. New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago will have more job openings and offer higher salaries than smaller communities and rural areas. In return, nurses will be expected to work longer hours and deal with more stress.
